Proyecto Videos
El punto de partida de este post es una realidad desoladora: existen videos sobre el sorteo aplicado a la política, pero son muy escasos, de dudosa calidad, con apenas reproducciones, en solo algunos idiomas, poco atractivos,… y cualquiera puede comprobarlo buscando en Youtube. El déficit es tan evidente como encomiables las exiguas iniciativas que intentan llenar este vacío.
Supongo que para EBL la difusión del sorteo es uno de los principales objetivos. EBL difunde el sorteo y lo hace con la escritura, una herramienta de comunicación tan necesaria como insuficiente. No soy de los que piensa que una imagen vale más que mil palabras. Basta pensar en un enfermo con un tumor sospechoso que visita al medico en el momento del diagnóstico definitivo: cuando el médico dice “es benigno” las lágrimas del paciente serán bien distintas de las que brotarán con un “es maligno”. Sobran las imágenes.
Sin embargo, nos guste o no, estamos en la era de la imagen y desdeñar esta realidad se paga caro: disminuye la difusión. No creo que ninguno de vosotros se oponga a la idea de realizar videos sobre el sorteo. No creo que ninguno de vosotros dude de la utilidad de los videos con este propósito. Sin embargo, es muy probable que la mayoría de vosotros piense que realizar videos de este tipo está fuera de su alcance, de sus habilidades, de su responsabilidad, de su capacidad…pero yo creo que está al alcance de cualquiera de vosotros, que tenéis habilidades, que tenéis algo de responsabilidad y que sois capaces de hacerlo, total o parcialmente, bien de modo directo, bien de modo inducido. El primer paso es pensar en hacerlo el siguiente es cómo.
Me dirijo a los usuarios de EBL para intentar convenceros de la necesidad de pensar y actuar también en clave audiovisual y, al mismo tiempo, propongo a los administradores del blog que creen una sección con el nombre de, por ejemplo, proyecto videos, que se destine a recoger y coordinar todos los esfuerzos que podemos realizar en este sentido. Antes de ir más lejos con mi propuesta es necesario debatir si percibís la carencia que os señalo y si estáis dispuestos a colaborar, incluso los que penséis que no sabéis cómo. Existen muchas maneras de hacerlo y yo estoy haciéndolo ahora mismo al escribir este post.
Video Projects
The reason for writing this post arises from a stark reality: there are some videos about sortition applied to politics, but they are few and far between, of dubious quality, receiving few viewings, in limited languages, unappealing … and anyone can verify this by searching on Youtube. The deficit is as obvious as the meager yet commendable initiatives that attempt to fill this gap.
I imagine that for Equality-by-Lot the dissemination of sortition is one of its main objectives. EbL communicates the idea of random selection and does so in writing, a communication tool which is as necessary as it is insufficient. I do not believe that an image is worth more than a thousand words; imagine the scenario of a patient with a suspected tumor visiting the doctor for the final diagnosis: when the doctor says “it is benign” the tears of the patient are quite different from those that flow if he says “it is malignant.”
However, like it or not, we are in the era of the image and dismissing this reality can be costly: it decreases the spreading of information. I doubt that any of you object to the idea of making videos about sortition. I do not think any of you doubt the usefulness of videos for this purpose. However, it is likely that most of you think that making videos of this type is out of your reach, that you do not possess the necessary skills, that it is not your responsibility, that you are not capable … but I think it is accessible to any of you. I believe that you have skills, that you have some responsibility and that you are capable, in whole or in part, either directly, or indirectly. The first step is to think about doing it, the second is how to do it.
I am addressing EbL readers to try to convince you of the need to think and act from an audiovisual viewpoint and at the same time, I propose to the blog administrators to create a section called, for example, “video projects”, which is intended to collect and coordinate all the efforts we make in this respect. Before going any further with my proposal it is necessary to discuss whether you consider there to be a real lack of videos in this field and if you are willing to cooperate, even if at this point in time, you do not know how. There are many ways to get involved as I am doing right now by writing this post.

Sounds like a good idea which is certainly worth a try. Creating a “video projects” section in one form or another will be easy.
Of course, the heart of the matter is creating the videos themselves. I presume you have some experience in this area. Could you give us an illustration of what is involved? Here are some specific questions:
* What are the steps of creating a simple – but still appealing (or high quality) – video? (Maybe a “what is sortition?” clip that would have a message similar to that of our “what is sortition?” page.)
* How many work hours would it take?
* Are there software tools that are necessary?
* Are there special skills that need to be learned?

En contra de tu suposición, no tengo ninguna experiencia en la creación de videos y, por tanto, no puedo contestar con precisión a tus preguntas. Pero si que se que cualquier persona con interés y perseverancia puede elaborar videos con cierta calidad (Conozco un poco a dos personas que lo han hecho partiendo desde cero: compraron una videocámara y aprendieron a manejar un editor de video. Por desgracia a estas personas no les interesa el sorteo).
En estos momentos me considero incapaz de realizar un vídeo de calidad yo solo, aunque no descarto realizar, más adelante, un vídeo casero con más o menos ingenio. Cuando no sabes nada de vídeos, realizar uno personalmente puede requerir mucho tiempo y dedicación.
De momento, yo he optado por escribiros a vosotros y también solicito ayuda para que lo haga alguien que realmente conozca el tema. Durante los últimos meses pregunto a la gente con la que me relaciono si conocen a alguien que realice vídeos para que me pongan en contacto con ellos. Aunque conseguir este tipo de citas no es muy difícil, sí que lo es el siguiente paso: enamorar a esta persona de la idea del sorteo. Esa sería la situación ideal: que una persona con habilidades cinematográficas se implicase con el sorteo e hiciese totalmente suyo el proyecto, o al menos parte del proyecto, porque quizá necesite ideas o guiones que le podemos proporcionar nosotros, tú y yo, más toda la gente que defiende el sorteo y quiera colaborar.
Lo que te acabo de relatar es el camino que sigo yo para intentarlo pero existen otros muchos. Como sugerencias, creo que cualquier usuario de EBL puede colaborar de varias maneras:
– Contactando con gente amateur o profesional de los videos e intentar persuadirlos para colaborar.
– Escribiendo guiones
– Facilitando imágenes
– Participando como actores o cediendo su imagen en una entrevista
– Difundiendo el proyecto
– Aportando financiación
– Elaborando vídeos caseros
– Componiendo la banda sonora
– Interpretando la banda sonora
– Traduciendo los contenidos para doblarlos o subtitularlos en varios idiomas
– Identificando barreras para que la idea sea convincente
– Etc.
La clave del asunto es tener clara la necesidad de elaborar estos vídeos. A pesar de los problemas, pienso que elaborar videos es un objetivo a nuestro alcance y cuya dificultad dependerá mucho de la suerte y de la energía que dediquemos a ello.

Contrary to what you may think, I have no experience whatsoever in making videos and therefore I can’t answer your questions accurately. However, I do know that anyone with interest and perseverance can create videos of reasonable quality (I know two people who have done this having no previous experience: they bought a camcorder and taught themselves how to use a video editor. Unfortunately these people are not interested in sortition).
At the moment I don’t feel capable of producing a quality video myself, although I don’t rule out the possibility of creating a “home-made” video with a fair dose of ingenuity in the future. When you don’t know anything about creating videos, making one yourself would require a lot of time and dedication.
For the time being I have decided to write to you and also to ask for help from someone who really understands the field. In the last few months I have asked various people if they know of anyone who makes videos so that I can get in touch with them. Although contacting this type of people isn’t difficult, the next step is: getting this person interested in sortition. This would be the ideal scenario: someone with cinematographic skills interested in sortition who would take on the project or at least part of the project, as they would probably need ideas and scripts that we ourselves could provide, you and I, and anyone else supporting sortition and willing to participate.
What I have outlined above is what I have done to try to achieve this but there are many other ways to go about it:
– Contacting amateur or professional video makers and persuading them to collaborate with us.
– Writing scripts
– Providing images
– Volunteering as actors or agreeing to be interviewed
– Making people aware of the project/spreading the ideas behind sortition
– Providing funding
– Creating “home-made” videos
– Composing a soundtrack
– Recording the soundtrack
– Translating the contents – dubbing or subtitling in various languages
– Identifying and preempting problems so as to make the idea as convincing as possible
– Etc.
The crux of the matter is being convinced of the need to create these videos. Despite the possible difficulties, I think that creating videos is a feasible goal well within our reach, the difficulty of which will depend mainly on luck and the energy and dedication that we give to it.

I would be interested in taking part in one way or another. I guess I could try writing a script.
I am guessing the video you linked to – despite its apparent simplicity – required significant skill and experience and a significant investment in time. Of course, we don’t have to reach this level of professionalism, at least not at first.

Ahora mismo, yo que nada se de videos, tengo tres acciones en marcha a este respecto en las que tú, y otras personas podríais colaborar:
1) He convencido a un buen dibujante para que elabore un comic. El va a dibujar el comic pero primero necesitamos de un buen guión. Luego filmaremos el comic y lo subiremos a Youtube y a EBL.
2) Quiero contactar con las personas que han elaborado este video con textos en ingles: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=GVkMGLEGuLc para que me faciliten las imágenes sin los textos en ingles con el propósito de sustituirlos por textos en otros idiomas (desde luego en español)
3) Esta propuesta para EBL (proyecto videos) que tiene como objetivo conseguir que todos los partidarios del sorteo tengamos un referente, unamos esfuerzos y este trabajo sea mucho mas fácil.
Unos ejemplos de lo que podría suponer el éxito del proyecto videos:
– Yo no tendría que escribir a los autores del video que he mencionado antes: las imágenes sin texto sobreimpresionado estarían a mi disposición para sobreimpresionarlas en español. Otros lo podrían hacer en ruso, alemán, sueco… Ni siquiera tendría que haber averiguado que este video existía: estaría en EBL.
– Vosotros podríais aportar ideas para el guión del comic que tengo en perspectiva porque tendríais constancia por EBL de la existencia del proyecto del comic.
– Yo facilitaría los dibujos de nuestro comic sin texto en español para que otros escribiesen las viñetas en otros idiomas. Creo que tú puedes encargarte de la versión en hebreo.
Me parece importante intentar que EBL sea un lugar de referencia con este objetivo. No para tener protagonismo sino para facilitar el trabajo. Animo, cualquiera de vosotros puede hacer lo que yo estoy haciendo, o mejor. Hace falta interés y perseverancia, es verdad. Pensemos también en clave audiovisual…y conseguiremos que nuestras ideas alcancen a más personas.

Hi, I think Etienne Chouard is also a great person to defend sortition for a political use. We’re trying to translate as much videos as we can. recently we just finished a new conference (Lyon, march 2012, 4 parts translated in English). It’s nearly three years since the last post. I didn’t see this until now.
Yes, I have made videos about sortition. They are one-man-band type of videos, meant to elicit interest from production houses with more resources than I have.
I have written two feature-length scripts — a political action drama and a magic realist comedy — posited on a sortitioned legislature. I am working on a third script and have a fourth in mind.
I also have submitted a treatment for a television series — something opposite to the cynical and reactive programs currently gathering attention.
