This was published on Open Democracy last week: The Irish Citizens’ Assembly on abortion: democratisation or dodging responsibility?

I find it very exciting, that the Irish government is returning for their second assembly using sortition – this time without politicians. Although we’ll have to wait and see what they do with the results.

It’s due to start next month.

  1. For the Irish government, CA is another tool in their arsenal. It is to be applied either when a useful result is expected or when they don’t care what the results are. There is little reason to think that this procedure is a harbinger of democratization of society any more than the introduction of the “popular initiative” (the Oregon system) was.
